HMO licensing in Tower Hamlets: the local picture
Shared houses near Mile End and multi-occupied flats in Bow need their occupancy recorded accurately before licensing paperwork is assembled. Tower Hamlets' additional scheme extends across the borough, including flats, while the mandatory scheme remains relevant to larger qualifying HMOs. Peachtree Maintenance helps arrange inspection documentation and repairs linked to council requirements or existing licence conditions. Send the current layout, shared facility details and any council correspondence. Check planning separately before converting accommodation or changing its use, because a property licence is not planning permission.
What the rules say
In England a mandatory licence is needed where five or more people from two or more households share facilities such as a kitchen or bathroom. Councils can also run additional licensing for smaller HMOs and selective licensing for other private lets.
Applications usually need current gas, electrical and fire safety documents, floor plans and management details. Licences commonly run for up to five years and carry conditions. We help gather the evidence and keep it current. We are not a law firm.
Tower Hamlets licensing
Tower Hamlets' additional licensing designation covers the whole borough and requires privately let shared properties, including flats, occupied by three or more people from two or more households to be licensed, subject to the applicable licensing route and exemptions. The designation runs from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2029 unless revoked earlier.
